Louisville – An Easy & Fun Destination for GIE+EXPO

Travel Discounts, Pre-Concert Outings and Seasonal Attractions Add Value

Louisville has been dubbed a city that’s easy to get to and hard to leave, making it an ideal destination for GIE+EXPO, set for October 16-18, 2019. Industry members who are looking for easy travel, after-show-hours fun or reasons to extend their stay through the weekend will find that Louisville delivers on all fronts.

With direct flights from more than 20 cities, including locations on both coasts, Louisville’s airport (SDF) is serviced by nearly every major and regional airline. Those who prefer to drive will enjoy the city’s central location – within a day’s drive of over half the U.S. population – at the crossroads of three major interstates: 64, 65 and 71.

“Getting to Louisville is easy and affordable when planned in advance,” said Kris Kiser, managing partner of GIE+EXPO and OPEI President. “And, once you land in Louisville, you’ll find that this mid-sized city has a small-town feel that’s super-easy and convenient to navigate.”

The Kentucky Exposition Center, site of GIE+EXPO, is across the interstate from the airport and a 10-minute drive from downtown, which is home to thousands of hotel rooms, one-of-a-kind attractions, restaurants to suit every budget and taste, and Fourth Street Live! where the free GIE+EXPO concerts are held.

“We have been attending GIE+EXPO for over 10 years and benefit from bringing our team. Louisville is a great city and a very convenient place for us to easily get to in a couple of hours by plane, so it is a valuable investment for us,” said Douglass Delano of Level Green Landscaping in Upper Marlboro, MD.

Travel Discounts

Opportunities for participants to save on travel to the show include pre-arranged hotel rates and airline discounts. Louisville's Housing Bureau makes booking hotel reservations quick and easy with pre-arranged rates. In addition, anyone who books through the bureau will be entered to win prizes ranging from a Louisville gift basket or personalized bourbon bottles to a complimentary hotel room during the show. In addition, four airlines are currently offering discounts for GIE+EXPO travel. For details on hotel and airline discounts, check the Hotel & Travel menu at www.gie-expo.com.

NEW – Free Pre-Concert Attractions

New this year, GIE+EXPO attendees can enjoy free visits to two popular downtown museums Tuesday and Thursday between 5 and 8pm. Both are walkable from many hotels as well as Fourth Street Live!

Tuesday evening, the Frazier History Museum will open its doors to showcase the history of the United States from early settlement through Colonization, the Revolutionary War, Civil War and the multi-faceted origins of America’s cultural landscape. As the official starting point of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail® and home to the Trail’s Welcome Center, the museum is known for The Spirit of Kentucky® exhibit. For more information, visit www.fraziermuseum.org.

Thursday evening, attendees can spend some time in the Muhammad Ali Center. This award-winning interactive attraction, located on downtown’s riverfront, gives visitors an inside look at Ali’s journey towards greatness in the boxing ring and on the world’s stage. Seasonal Fun for a Weekend Stay

As noted by PureWow, Louisville is one of “America’s Best Cities for a Long Weekend,” and visitors who decide to extend their stay in October should get ready for a spook-tacular time. Louisville is home to two unique Halloween attractions.

At the Jack O’Lantern Spectacular, 5,000 carved pumpkins line a 1/3-mile walking trail, illuminated at night as an “art show.” MSN.com has rated it as one of the “10 Best Places to Celebrate Halloween.” The show runs daily from dusk (approximately 7:15pm) to 11pm Sunday-Thursday and closes at midnight on Friday & Saturday. Visit www.jackolanternlouisville.com for information or to purchase tickets in advance.

The Waverly Hills Sanatorium has been featured on the TV show Ghost Hunters as being one of the most haunted hospitals in the U.S. Those who are brave enough can take a haunted house tour in this old sanatorium that once accommodated tuberculosis patients. It’s open 8pm to midnight Friday and Saturday nights in October. Details are available at www.therealwaverlyhills.com.

Dynamic Concert Venue

The downtown area is teeming with excitement at Fourth Street Live! The free GIE+EXPO concert series, held at this entertainment complex Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights, will include Easton Corbin, Cassadee Pope and The Crashers.

Fourth Street Live! features restaurants such as Hard Rock Café, TGI Friday’s, Guy Fieri’s Smokehouse, Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant, Whiskey Dry, Brazeiros Churrascaria Brazilian Steakhouse and The Sports & Social Club – a relaxed sports bar offering classic pub food and tremendous sports viewing. In addition, the Jim Beam Stillhouse offers tours of a small working distillery, a bottling line, a tasting experience and a unique bottle-your-own-bourbon experience.

The venue is within walking distance of all major downtown hotels.
