NHLA Plans Seminar Program at GIE+EXPO

Latino Link Sessions Announced for Dealers and Contractors in English and Spanish

(Louisville, KY, September 21, 2017) - The National Hispanic Landscape Alliance (NHLA) has planned a seminar program during GIE+EXPO with sessions for both dealers and contractors. Attendees at GIE+EXPO (Green Industry & Equipment Expo) will have the opportunity to attend Latino Link™ sessions all three days of the show. GIE+EXPO, scheduled for October 18-20 at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, draws more than 18,000 participants to see the latest innovations and attend first-rate education programs.

With sessions in English and Spanish, topics have been designed to appeal to a wide range of attendees, including:

  • Dealers seeking to increase sales to area Hispanics
  • Hispanic contractors eager to achieve greater success
  • Non-Hispanics wishing to better engage Hispanic employees

New this year, a three-part series on the Certified Landscape Technician (CLT) maintenance content will be presented by Henry Mayer, bilingual horticulture instructor with the University of Florida Extension Service. The three engaging sessions (four total hours of instruction) will help prepare native Spanish-speakers for the CLT exam while helping experienced and novice crew members, foremen and others to increase their knowledge and professionalism.

Wednesday, October 18

Latino Link™ Dealer Breakfast: Gaining Market Dominance by Building Customers for Life (in English)

Pre-registration is required. $25, includes breakfast.

Panel: Josh Coffman (Everglades Farm Equipment, Tampa, FL), Ben Davis (Austin Turf, Austin, TX), Raúl Berrios (RulyScapes, Centreville, VA), Iván Giraldo (Clean Scapes, Austin, TX) and Rafael Díaz (Diaz Group, Chicago, IL).

Moderator: Pam Berrios (ALS Services, Alexandria, VA)

Dealers on the panel will share how they have found success through:

  • Selling (new and pre-owned), leasing, renting and in some instances loaning equipment as a way to alleviate a customer's pain
  • Fleet management consulting to help customers maximize the value of their equipment dollars
  • Timely communication to set (or reset) expectations and allow the contractor to make adjustments to best leverage the manpower and equipment he does have and set the expectations of his customers
  • Offering (and providing education on) solution options (programs) to best address customer needs
  • Making the most of everyday opportunities to build relationships
  • Providing customers a facility tour and describing the services provided, parts in inventory, etc.

Contractors will provide their perspectives on how these and other practices can attract or repel prospective customers. Learn the keys to making yours the go-to destination for local landscape contractors.

Seminar in Spanish: Loving Your Grass so it Loves You Back

Presenter: Henry Mayer, Commercial Urban Horticulture Extension Agent, University of Florida Extension Service

This session will cover the do’s and don’ts of turf installation and turf maintenance, and will also address the keys to safe turf equipment operation. Session attendees will learn:

  • How to better appreciate the benefits of turfgrass
  • How to identify the common turfgrass varieties
  • How to select the right turfgrass for a site
  • How to maintain newly installed sod
  • Turfgrass mowing and irrigation guidelines
  • Aeration and de-thatching procedures
  • The life cycle of the weeds: broadleaf, grassy and sedges
  • To identify common insect pests on grass
  • To identify common diseases on grass

Avoid the lunch lines and take advantage of the opportunity to network with other show attendees over lunch at tables featuring discussion topics facilitated by NHLA leaders and others. Seminar in Spanish: Landscaping: Creating Beauty from the Ground to the Sky

Presenter: Henry Mayer, Commercial Urban Horticulture Extension Agent, University of Florida Extension Service

This session will cover plants and how to plant them, as well as tree and shrub maintenance. Session attendees will learn:

  • Environmental conditions that should be considered when selecting plants for a site
  • To identify a plant’s structures and explain how they grow
  • The steps required to properly plant trees and shrubs
  • The correct procedure for staking plants
  • The importance of watering correctly
  • The importance of pruning and identifying pruning tools and their use
  • Common insects that affect trees and shrubs
  • Common diseases that affect trees and shrubs

3:00 – 4:15 PM

Seminar in Spanish: Workplace Safety, the Mark of a Professional Operation

Presenter: Henry Mayer, Commercial Urban Horticulture Extension Agent, University of Florida Extension Service

This session will cover the keys to achieving greater workplace safety:

  • The types of equipment used for turf maintenance
  • General safety guidelines for motorized turf equipment
  • The types of equipment used for landscape maintenance
  • General safety guidelines for motorized landscape equipment
  • The importance of job site accident prevention and some examples
  • Effective responses to emergency situations

Friday, October 20

ROOTED & CONNECTED: How New Contacts Provided the Roadmap to Greater Success (in English)

Panelists: Iván Giraldo (Clean Scapes, Austin, TX), Rafael Díaz (Diaz Group, Chicago, IL), Chuy Medrano (CoCal Landscape, Denver, CO) and Josh Denison (Denison Landscaping, Fort Washington, MD)

Moderator: Raul Berrios (RulyScapes, Centreville, VA)

Attendees will learn how industry leaders across the country found inspiration, solutions to operations, marketing and staffing challenges, and help with getting through difficult times through purposeful networking made possible by the National Hispanic Landscape Alliance. Don’t be overwhelmed by the industry’s largest show. Go to East Hall, Rm 4 at 1:15 PM to participate in guided small-group tours of the show floor and Outdoor Demonstration Area. NHLA leaders will conduct tours for small groups in English or Spanish and will introduce participants to leading manufacturer representatives at each stop. Make the most of your time at the show!
